INTRODUCTION OF LIBERTY MINE SERVICES

To all our valued employees, communities and stakeholders

You may be aware of the developments in recent weeks that will see certain mining operations at the Optimum Colliery being restructured, as Liberty Coal’s contractual arrangements with one of its independent contractors, Salaria (Pty) Limited and the Veralogix group of companies, come to their natural end over the next few months upon expiry of their contracts with the Company, and the arrangements for orderly termination of their activities at Optimum Colliery are being finalised.

At the same time the Liberty Group will be implementing its long-standing plans of appointing Liberty Mine Services, a member of the Liberty group of companies, as its principal mining contractor under its own independent management, to further develop and execute the planned mining operations at Optimum Colliery.

The appointment of Liberty Mine Services represents the beginning of an exciting new phase in the Company’s progressive restoration of the Mine. As part of this process, over and above the capital projects already in progress to rebuild its draglines and HMS plant, the Company will be investing in a new fleet of mining equipment.

Liberty Mine Services will be actively working with Salaria and Veralogix to the extent possible, to ensure that all qualifying employees currently employed at the Optimum Colliery by Salaria and Veralogix willing and able to continue working at the Mine are offered the opportunity to do so, and has already initiated engagements with the relevant unions, employee and stakeholder forums.

Liberty Coal sees this new phase of operations with Liberty Mine Services as an opportunity to streamline and accelerate the further development of its mining business in a structured and sustainable way and looks forward to the ongoing support of all stakeholders in returning Optimum Colliery to the successful and profitable enterprise it should be.
